For people who want to read Sun's EOL policy for Java you can find it here:
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/eol.policy.html

While I agree with Anil I do also recognize that people are slow to upgrade their commercial containers, which may still use Java 1.4 (actually when we started OpenSAML2/J development I remember people were upset that we didn't support 1.3 as well). This is why I left the door open so that if some one really feels 1.4 support is necessary they can work with us to keep it on our supported list.

JDK4 will be EOLed this year and JDK5 is close to EOL.

So, this is the right choice. :)

Given our current resources we have decided not to attempt to support Java
1.4 any longer. We will add 1.4 back on to the supported list of Java
versions if some one is willing to do the work. This includes:
- adding support in the maven build process for backporting code through
something like retroweaver or retrotranslator
- checking to ensure no 1.5-only methods enter the code
- providing alternative code, in the form of patches, for any 1.5-only
code that may already be in the codebase
