You are absolutely correct, my mistake.
I was looking at the output in a browser. I see the correct output in the log file (and the HTML source).

I should clarify...it's possible to get nothing back, but if there's no
output, it threw an exception internally and will log the error.
It's not possible to get non-empty output back that's not XML, though.
