Actually, I don't know so much about artifacts, either. The only thing I
found was in the bindings document on page 17.

I considered that, you're right. I viewed it as basically a helper class
(akin to SAMLIdentifier), and as something that I'd rather
see somebody who knows something about artifacts write and donate. I just
haven't looked at them enough to know if there are any
subtleties.
In the same vein, if there's a reasonable wrapper API along the lines of
SAMLPOSTProfile, I'd be happy to sketch that in as well, I
just don't know enough about implementing the profile to know what would be
useful.
