OpenSAML user discussion

Hello,

I am new in this area and would like to know if OpenSAML is an 
answer for us.

We want to have a system where user logged into third party portal 
server gets an access to our content management product. We do not 
have any control over portal server authentication. If that portal 
server does not support SAML yet - is it possible to use SAML to 
exchange authentication information by writing something on top of 
it?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
