+ Extreme Internet Video
Attendees at the July 2004 APAN meeting saw the first-ever successful
transmission of uncompressed HD video using Microsoft Windows platforms at a
data rate of 1.5 Gbps demonstrated by ResearchChannel. The session "Extreme
Internet Video" showed several levels of Internet HDTV (High Definition
Television) including consumer-broadband quality compressed from 5 to 8
Mbps, broadcast quality compressed to just under 20 Mbps, and uncompressed
of the highest quality at 1.5 Gbps. ResearchChannel, along with its member
institutions and partners, have developed IP-based audio/video streaming
technologies spanning the entire spectrum of HDTV quality levels. The APAN
demonstration delivered Video On Demand (VOD) using software developed at
the University of Washington in conjunction with commercially available
video capture boards and PCI-X computers donated by Intel Corporation.
ResearchChannel will repeat the experiment soon over a longer distance
network utilizing recently available 10 Gbps network cards and will be
demonstrating at SC2004 in November. ResearchChannel is also adding HD
programming to the DigitalWell Project that already hosts over 2000 hours of
broadcast-quality VOD available to the public. For more information, see:

+ Nortel Networks Joins Texas A&M Research Project on E9-1-1 for VoIP
Internet2 Corporate Partner Nortel Networks has joined a Texas A&M
University research project that will help drive Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1)
access for next generation Internet Protocol (IP) networks. "We are
essentially building the future of E9-1-1," said Walt Magnussen, director,
Telecommunications, Texas A&M University and co-chair, VoIP Working Group,
Internet2. "We are taking a look at how networks will evolve and what will
be the most reliable and efficient way to deliver E9-1-1 service. By
bringing together both academia and industry participants, we can
collaborate to create the most effective solution." Texas A&M University is
home to the first Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center (ITEC) focused on
Voice over IP.

Working with David Lapsley (MIT Haystack), the E2Epi recently published a
case study describing how BWCTL was used to solve problems for two separate
transcontinental, real-time transmissions and processing of VLBI (Very Long
Baseline Interferometry) data tests.

+ NDT (Network Diagnostic Tool)
This month, E2Epi published a tool overview describing the most recent
modifications of the NDT; a tool originally developed at several DoE labs.
The NDT is an important component of piPEs, helping both novice and expert
users alike solve some of the most common end-to-end problems that occur in
the last mile of the path.

<> K20 Initiative Update
+ Nebraska Joins the SEGP Community
Nebraska officials last month formally launched a statewide
telecommunications initiative that links government agencies, schools and
colleges. Network Nebraska, a cooperative project that includes a number of
different telecommunications companies, is aimed at offering affordable
broadband Internet connections to all areas of the largely rural state. A
major goal is to enable school and college students to get access to course
material no matter where they live via state-of-the-art distance learning
facilities.
