Internet2 international partner, held its annual networking conference from
7-10 June in Rhodes, Greece. The conference gathered delegates and
representatives from Europe's national research and education networking
organizations as well from many organizations around the world. Several
staff members from Internet2 and from member organizations participated and
presented on middleware, measurement tools and end-to-end performance
issues, protocol development, collaborative and video technologies and
updates on US optical networking initiatives, highlighting the important
level of collaborations between the European and US advanced networking
communities. More information is available in the End-to-End Performance
Initiative section of this update. All presentations are now available at:

+ SALSA Security Workshop
SALSA (the Security at Line Speed Advisory) will hold a security workshop in
Columbus, Ohio on 21-22 July (immediately following the Joint Techs
Workshop). Attendees will discuss the ways in which security can be extended
to address the upcoming needs of advanced application and network users. The
workshop will focus on current activities inside of SALSA, specifically the
new NetArch and NetAuth working groups, how to leverage middleware to
support security, and the evolution of the Security at Line Speed report.

+ First SIP.edu Implementors Workshop a Success
The Internet2 SIP.edu project is promoting the convergence of voice and
email identities, is growing SIP-reachability within Internet2, and is
building a community of Internet2 schools that are developing and deploying
campus SIP services. In one year, the project has extended SIP reachability
to nearly 100,000 users at four universities, attracted corporate
sponsorship, and published a "cookbook" to lower the implementation hurdle
for others. Representatives from throughout the Internet2 community recently
gathered at the first SIP.edu Implementors Workshop. Key leaders in SIP.edu
deployment made presentations on the current status of SIP.edu at their
institutions and charted a course for scaling up campus and inter-campus SIP
service deployment. Workshop outcomes included an improved understanding of
campus SIP deployment issues, next-steps for the SIP.edu Cookbook, and
consensus on the need for a second, more hands-on workshop. The workshop
was hosted by University of Pennsylvania and sponsored by Comcast.

<> K20 Initiative Update
+ Announcing New myK20 Functionality
The K20 Initiative has been working on ways to make it easier for K20
constituent groups to collaborate.
It is now possible to use myK20 as a project communication tool. Each of
the 55 projects currently entered in myK20 now have a web forum available.
If you sign in to myK20 and do a project search, you can subscribe to the
project forum by simply selecting the "add to my projects" button located
next to each project description. Then if you go to the myProjects section
of myK20 you will see that the project has been added to your list and you
have access to the forum. You can also control the type of email
notification you receive whenever someone posts to the forum.

Dartmouth College recently launched a new initiative to replace the campus
telephone system, with plans to install over 6000 Cisco Systems VoIP (Voice
over IP) phones over the next two years. Investments in the campus LAN have
allowed VoIP calls to be routed across Dartmouth's converged data/telephone
network with high quality.
