<> OpenSAML
Internet2 announced on July 15th the availability of OpenSAML, an open
source reference implementation of the Security Assertions Markup Language
(SAML). SAML is a framework defined by the Security Services Technical
Committee within the Organization for the Advancement of Structured
Information Standards (OASIS) that will, for example, play a part in making
it easier to log into multiple Web sites. OpenSAML is an open source
reference implementation of this standard that was developed by the
Middleware Architecture Committee for Education (MACE), Open SAML has
attracted broad interest from academic and corporate sectors. For more
information: http://middleware.internet2.edu/opensaml

<> Internet2 Detective
The first public release of the Internet2 Detective is now available. The
Internet2 Detective, which uses a Windows client, lets the user know if the
computer is connected to an Internet2 backbone network, available bandwidth,
and whether multicast streams are available. The latest version of, and more
information about, the Internet2 Detective is available at:
http://detective.internet2.edu/

<> Internet2 K20 Initiative Update
+ MOREnet Named SEGP of the Month
The Globalization Initiative, a project implemented by the University of
Missouri-Columbia's College of Education, has created a global learning
community using advanced technologies and Internet2 to develop and foster
school/community relationships, promote cross-cultural learning and
experiences and facilitate comprehensive school improvement.

Currently, four schools in Taipei, Taiwan, are connected with K-12 schools
in Missouri, as well as with Missouri faculty and pre-service teachers.
Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet) provides access to
Internet2 for participants to communicate through videoconferencing, digital
resource exchange and e-mail.

+ ViDeNet Version 3 Architecture
The ViDeNet Working Group is pleased to announce the availability of the
ViDeNet version 3 architecture. Because of the new H.323 dial plan, each
existing ViDeNet zone will need to obtain a new zone prefix. The existing
version 2 ViDeNet Master Gatekeeper will be kept in service until September
25, but will be discontinued thereafter. As the Internet2 Commons uses the
ViDeNet dial plan, this notice applies to all Internet2 Site Coordinators.

<> International Update
+ AARNet (Australia) and IPv6 workshops
Australia's National Academic and Research Network has recently announced
another round of IPv6 workshops that will be taking place in Australia.
AARNet and GrangeNet have jointly organized a series of workshops geared at
Australian network specialists. The goal of the workshops is to have
attendees return to their campuses and provide engineering support for IPv6
networks for their institutions, to explain IPv6 engineering concepts to
peers, and, in some cases, to help teach or facilitate more workshops on
IPv6.

AARNet is an Internet2 international partner and manages Australia's
Academic and Research Network providing high-capacity Internet services
between universities and research institutions in Australia and globally.
AARNet participates in the International Transit Network.

<> Middleware Update
+ Shibboleth
Shibboleth facilitates inter-institutional sharing of web resources subject
to access controls. The release of the beta code is due in August and a
production code release scheduled for October. There was a good response to
the Call for Participation in the Shibboleth Pilot. Sites are being
contacted to prepare for deployment of Shibboleth code. Project updates are
maintained at http://middleware.internet2.edu/shibboleth/

+ National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative (NMI)
The NMI management team is identifying the deliverables for Release 2
scheduled for October 27th, 2002. The team met on July 16th and 17th with
the Developer Grant Awardees for years one and two.

+ Digital Rights Management (DRM) Workshop
A DRM workshop, endorsed by CNI, EDUCAUSE, Internet2, SURA, ViDe, and funded
by an NMI Award, will be held in early September. The workshop will explore
emerging middleware, particularly directory issues and the role they may
play as a foundation for DRM in research and education.

+ Campus Architectural Middleware Planning (CAMP) Meetings
An Advanced CAMP workshop was held July 30-August 2 in Boulder, Colorado.
This session was an opportunity for campus architects and those with
experience in Middleware to share their knowledge and to further their
research. Presentation materials can be found at: http://www.nmi-edit.org/

<> End-to-End Performance Initiative (E2Epi)
+ E2E Performance Initiative Performance Environment (piPE) Overview
Released
The E2Epi team has been forging ahead on the E2E Performance Initiative
Performance Environment (piPE) architecture design. This tool will enable
end users to identify problematic links in the E2E chain and points of
contact to resolve such issues. Moreover, it will regularly gather
performance data between key nodes in the web of campuses, regional
networks, gigaPoPs, and the Abilene backbone. A general overview of the
architecture is presented as a white paper, available at
http://e2epi.internet2.edu/e2epipe_index.shtml
