The Internet2 K20 Initiative recently added a "Featured SEGP" section to the
website designed to showcase compelling uses of advanced networking in SEGP
communities. The activities of the Virginia SEGP were the first to be
highlighted. This is part of an ongoing effort to develop the website as a
communication and collaboration tool for K20 Initiative participants.

+ Call for Demos
The deadline for submitting applications for Fall 2002 Internet2 Member
Meeting demos has been extended until July 26. We seek applications from
all disciplines; the primary objective is that we showcase network-intensive
applications that demonstrate the reality and the potential of Internet2
environments. By network-intensive, we mean applications that require one or
more advanced network features, such as high bandwidth, low latency,
multicast, IPv6, and quality of service. Corporate and affiliate members are
also invited to participate in the demos. The type of demos we'd like to
feature could include how Internet2 members, and their collaborators, are
using high performance networks to run the applications their researchers
developed and as a testbed for developing new ones. Demos that illustrate
how Internet2 can facilitate technology transfer from the lab to the
marketplace are also welcome. The Fall Internet2 Member Meeting will be held
October 28-30 in Los Angeles, California. Internet2 is also soliciting demos
for SC2002 and Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meeting.

+ European Advanced Networking Community meets in Limerick, Ireland
TNC2002 was held at the University of Limerick, Ireland from 3 - 6 June and
was attended by over 400 participants. The conference was organized by
TERENA -- an Internet2 International partner and a membership organization
of European National Research Networks (NRNs) -- and hosted by HEAnet, the
Irish NRN, also an Internet2 international partner. An archive of the
presentations that were streamed live from the conference are available. The
opening keynote presentation by Lawrence Lessig of Stanford Law School was
later replayed during June's Internet2 Virtual Briefing.
Live Stream Archive: http://www.terena.nl/conferences/tnc2002/streams/
Presentations: http://www.terena.nl/conferences/tnc2002/proceedings.html
Several individuals from the Internet2 community participated in the
conference, contributing to the middleware, advanced networking and
collaboration tools sessions. Michael Gettes from Georgetown University
was a member of the program committee and presented along with Ken
Klingenstein (Internet2), Bob Morgan (University of Washington), Keith
Hazelton (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Ted Hanss, Guy Almes and Ana
Preston (Internet2). The next TERENA conference will be in Zagreb, Croatia
from 19 - 22 May 2003 and will be held jointly with the CARNet (Croatian
NRN) Users Conference CUC2003.
<> Middleware Update
+Shibboleth
Shibboleth facilitates inter-institutional sharing of web resources subject
to access controls. Alpha 2 code was recently released, with the release of
beta code due in August and production code scheduled for end of September.
A Call for Participation in the Shibboleth Pilot was released in mid June
and is available at:
http://middleware.internet2.edu/shibboleth/shibboleth-cfp.shtml.
Interested institutions are asked to submit brief letters of interest to
George Brett
<>
or Renee Frost
<>
by
July 12th. Project updates are maintained at
http://middleware.internet2.edu/shibboleth/
+Directories
A Technical Advisory Board of key directory experts from higher education
and corporations has been formed to provide guidance for the directory work
coordinated by Internet2 MACE. The MACE-Dir working group is developing a
Groups Implementers Guide.
+National Science Foundation Middleware Initiative (NMI)
The institutions selected for the NMI Testbed phase had their first meeting
in Atlanta mid-June. Each is preparing a work plan for the testing of NMI
Release 1 components. The NMI management team is identifying the
deliverables for Release 2 scheduled for October 27th, 2002 and will meet in
July with the Developer Grant Awardees for years one and two.

+ Campus Architectural Middleware Planning (CAMP) Meetings
A Base CAMP workshop was held June 24-26 in Boulder, Colorado. This session
was an opportunity for CIOs/technology management and IT architects from
campuses in the early stages of enterprise middleware planning and
deployment to learn about practices and recommendations in higher education.
Presentation materials can be found at: http://www.nmi-edit.org/
An Advanced CAMP workshop targeted at experienced IT architects is planned
for July 30th to August 2nd in Boulder, Colorado. More information and
registration are available at:

<> End-to-End Performance Initiative (E2Epi)
+ Performance Measurement Architecture Document
Your comments are wanted regarding the most recent version of the
Performance Measurement Architecture document written by Russ Hobby. This
document addresses the traditional network portions of the path, but also
the host computer/operating system and applications that make up the
complete path as a performance bottleneck in any of these portions will
affect the overall performance as seen by the end user. Please send your
comments to Russ Hobby
<>.
Plans for a Measurement/E2E presence at the Joint Techs meetings in Boulder,
CO July 26-30 are underway. Session updates include E2EpiPES ( End-to-End
performance initiative Performance Evaluation System), and Beacon work being
done at ITEC Ohio at Ohio State University. There will also be a BoF session
where you can provide input to E2Epi activities and to the Measurement
Working Group as their activities are closely related to end-to-end
performance. Information can be found at
http://www.ncne.nlanr.net/training/techs/2002/0728/agenda.html
+ Call for Participation: Your Stories
E2Epi is issuing a Call for Participation (CFP) to its members, asking them
to propose compelling best current practices to allow end users and support
staff to resolve performance problems routinely and consistently. For
further information and guidelines, please see the E2Epi Call for
Participation: http://e2epi.internet2.edu/cfp_01.shtml
