SingAREN adds 100G connection to Internet2 network

New connection enables collaboration with United States R&E networks

WASHINGTON, DC, April 27, 2016—To enable groundbreaking research using high performance computing, global extension of education programs and other advanced networking applications, the Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN) and Internet2 have completed a 100G direct connection between Singapore and the United States. The 100G connection links the advanced national research and education networks in Singapore and the United States and creates a platform upon which other national, regional and global high performance collaborations can be built.

“Singapore’s strategic investments in biomedical research, high performance computing and genomics can be more fully realized with this new high performance collaboration with our partners in the United States,” said Dr. John Kan, SingAREN President. “This new 100G capability will accelerate research collaborations between University researchers in Singapore and the United States and also will enable our partnerships with commercial research organizations to flourish in a way that once wouldn’t have been possible. The possibilities are limitless.”

“Internet2 is delighted to have 100G connectivity with Singapore and surrounding Asian countries to support the delivery of education and research programs for Internet2’s University members and their corporate research partners. This capability enables our community to meaningfully engage, interact, and do business in a global ecosystem, propelling innovation in research and education,” said Dave Lambert, Internet2, president and CEO.

The new 100G link spans the Pacific from SingAREN’s open exchange point in Singapore to Internet2’s open access backbone node in Los Angeles, California. In Singapore, it connects to National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC), Singapore, research institutes and institutes of higher learning.  In the US, Internet2’s network interconnects with over 300 University members, as well as strategic corporate partners and other national research and education networks around the world. The Los Angeles node is also interconnected with Pacific Wave and the Pacific Research platform. The Singapore-Los Angeles Link also has future potential for 100G interconnections in Guam, allowing additional global collaborations to emerge for collaborators in Singapore, the US and other pacific nations.
