Internet2 Names UC Berkeley’s Shelton Waggener As Senior Vice President

Ann Arbor, Mich.—March 15, 2012--Internet2 President and CEO Dave Lambert announced today that Shelton Waggener, Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, University California, Berkeley, has joined Internet2 as Senior Vice President, effective May 19, 2012.  Mr. Waggener will provide senior executive leadership for Internet2 NET+ Services after his current role at the University of California, Berkeley concludes at the end of the spring 2012 semester.

“I am delighted to have Shelton join Internet2 and our senior executive leadership team. Shelton is recognized as a national leader in higher education, research and advanced technology. As a passionate supporter of education and research and an active member of the CIO community in the United States, he brings a track record and commitment to working with this critical community,” said Internet2 President and CEO Dave Lambert. “Shelton will expand our strategic vision and the work ahead, particularly as we advance and develop our Internet2 NET+ services and programs division. We are grateful that he desires to share his knowledge and experience to strengthen our network, organization, transformative efforts and Internet2 community.”

As Senior Vice President, Shelton will lead Internet2’s pursuit of emerging cloud and advanced services above the network involving demand aggregation and brokering with campus and commercial providers, and distributed offerings among its members. Internet2 NET+ includes compute, storage, platform and software services, the integration of identity management and federation with key applications for the research and education community, deployment of collaboration infrastructure among members, including video, coordination and sharing tools, content management, and domain applications. He will also provide leadership for Internet2’s InCommon federation, and middleware programs.

“Shelton is uniquely qualified to lead this initiative,” said Jack Seuss, chief information officer and vice president for information technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and chair of the InCommon Steering Committee. “As a CIO, he has been in the forefront of leading our community in above the campus thinking. As chair of AMSAC, I've watched as Shelton has led the Internet2 NET+ efforts and know that without his unique talents we would not have pulled this off. I'm thrilled he has accepted and know that Internet2 NET+ is in great hands.”

Shelton joined UC Berkeley in 2003 from Lucent Technologies where he served as the Chief Information Officer of the InterNetwork Systems Division. He began his campus career as Director of Central Computing until 2005, when, after a nationwide search, the university promoted Shelton to Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and campus Chief Information Officer. In addition to the CIO role, Shelton served as the head of the Information Systems and Technology control unit, which provides campus-wide computing, application, technical infrastructure and communications services.

During his nine years at UC Berkeley, Shelton made long-lasting contributions to the campus as well as the UC system, especially leadership for the implementation of the 2004 IT Strategic Plan. He and his team also led the effort to design and launch the state-of-the-research research and administrative data center and established a partnership with the Berkeley lab to provide expanded high performance research computing services to campus researchers. Shelton guided the dramatic expansion of shared computing resources, and through his leadership, numerous technology solutions developed or contributed to by Berkeley technology are open sourced and are now used by more than 100 universities nationwide. He also planned and oversaw implementation of the retirement of campus mainframe computing systems, an essential initiative in streamlining administrative activities and leveraging newer technology.

His fundamental redesign of core campus computing environments and organizations to a services-oriented approach laid the foundation for the Operational Excellence IT initiative, which he co-sponsored. Those projects include the recently implemented common desktop productivity suite, selection of Google Apps for Education, and a new vision for modernizing the campus approach to computing services. More broadly, Shelton is an active and influential member of numerous campus and UC system-wide planning and governance committees – and played a critical role in developing and implementing the Campus Information Technology Strategic Plan. He currently serves as Chair of the system-wide CIO leadership council, where adoption of Berkeley lead initiatives are freely shared with other UC campuses. Furthermore, his establishment of the campus Student Technology Council and related fundraising activities brought renewed engagement with Silicon Valley firms.

Interim Vice President for Internet2 NET+ Services, Jerry Grochow, has made invaluable contributions in delivering partnerships with HP, SHI International and Box while the nationwide search was conducted, and will continue to serve as a consultant for Internet2 NET+ Services and Internet2’s Executive Leadership Team.
