Internet2 Selects Martin Swany as First Internet2 Faculty Fellow

University of Delaware Professor Provides Leadership and Insight to
End-to-End Performance Initiative

Ann Arbor, MI. - August 15, 2005 - Internet2(R) today announced that
Professor Martin Swany of the University of Delaware's Department of
Computer and Information Sciences has been selected as the consortium's
first faculty fellow. Swany was chosen because of his deep experience in
network monitoring, a critical element of Internet2's End-to-End Performance
Initiative (E2Epi) that enables researchers from around the world to better
understand the performance of advanced next-generation networks.

As an Internet2 faculty fellow, Swany has taken the lead in designing key
components of a Web Services-based network measurement framework. He is also
working to develop a set of generic schemas for exchanging network
performance measurement data in addition to investigating
performance-enhancing transport layer proxies. Swany's work in this area has
enabled Internet2 to enhance its network discovery capabilities, improve
overall network authentication and authorization, as well as augment its
measurement archive for critical network data.

"Professor Swany has played an integral role in advancing our network
research capabilities as well as expanding our international collaborations,
which translates into a more reliable and more flexible network
infrastructure," said Eric Boyd, director of performance architecture and
technologies for Internet2. "As our inaugural faculty fellow, Professor
Swany has exceeded the organization's expectations and we look forward to
continuing our relationship with him and his students."

Internet2 began the faculty fellow program to engage its membership in
research and development initiatives. The program is a positive way to
reward faculty members, particularly those beginning the tenure process, for
their significant contributions to the Internet2 community.

Professor Swany added, "My research interests in advanced network
technologies mesh well with the goals of the Internet2 and I am delighted to
have had the opportunity to work so closely with the community. Network
technologies have radically changed computing, but these changes are really
only the beginning as we continue to explore new systems and approaches."
