FEDERAL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LEADERS TO BE FEATURED AT NATIONAL INTERNET2 MEMBER MEETING

Program on Advanced Networking Selected from MostProposals Ever

Washington, DC – March 12, 2003 – Presentations by Peter A. Freeman, assistant director of the National Science Foundation for Computer & Information Science & Engineering, and David B. Nelson, director of the National Coordination Office for Information Technology Research and Development, will be among the highlights at the Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting to be held April 9-11 in Arlington, Virginia.

As outlined by the National Science Foundation's Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure in its recently released report Revolutionizing Science and Engineering through Cyberinfrastructure, groundbreaking research in many fields of science and engineering, such as genomics and earthquake research, increasingly demands the use of advanced networking. Dr. Freeman will outline some of these demands and the research programs the National Science Foundation is encouraging to meet them.

With responsibility for the coordination of planning, budget, and assessment activities for the federal Networking and Information Technology R&D Program, Dr. Nelson will provide an overview of the federal government's activities in optical networks, middleware and grid computing, many of which are carried out through grants to universities.

Over 500 leaders in research and education networking from around the world are expected to attend the Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting. The meeting will feature sessions on the latest developments in optical networks, emerging middleware technologies, security on high-performance networks, and the scientific and scholarly collaboration capabilities enabled by advanced networking. The program was selected from the largest number of proposals ever submitted for an Internet2 Member Meeting.

Early registration for the Spring 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting closes on March 14. To register online, go to:
