NSF Awards High Performance Connections to 22 Institutions

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded high performance network connections to 19 additional universities, a research museum, and two research institutes, bringing the total of institutions assisted through such grants to 221.

Since 1995 the NSF High Performance Network Connections (HPNC) program has given scientists and engineers better access to research facilities across the U.S., including those maintained by NSF through its Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure program (PACI). HPNC and PACI are part of the NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). The new awardees will join in connecting to a national grid of research networks that operate at speeds up to 2.4 billion bits per second.

"These awards will go to a strikingly diverse set of institutions to enable a wide range of basic scientific research," said HPNC program director Greg Monaco.

Among the latest recipients are two universities (Wichita State University, Emporia State University) in EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) states -- those that have historically received fewer federal research funds. Other awardees (Fond du Lac Tribal College, Clark Atlanta University) are classified as Minority Serving Institutions (MSI).

"In addition to the EPSCoR and minority-serving institutions, we will connect the New York City's American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Massachusett's Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute -- institutions at the forefront of research in the fields of genomics and oceanography," Monaco said. "In addition, the extensive research data sets of AMNH will be accessible worldwide."

The two-year awards average $150,000, which will be matched at least equally by each recipient. Awardees may use the funds to connect with the vBNS (very high performance Backbone Network System) or the Internet2 consortium's Abilene.

DISTANCE COACHING DEMONSTRATION

October 15, 2001 - Miami Beach, FL - In anticipation of New
World Symphony's December 2001 entrance to the Internet2 network, NWS
artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas will lead a distance learning
demonstration utilizing Internet2 technology on Tuesday, October 23 at 2:30
p.m. from Florida International University. Via Internet2's ultra
high-speed backbone network, MTT will coach Manhattan School of Music Artist
Diploma candidate Donato Cabrera and the MSM Chamber Orchestra, rehearsing
Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, at Columbia University's Lerner Hall. In September 2001, the National Endowment for the Arts awarded
its first grant for artistic/Internet2 collaboration to the New World
Symphony. This $200,000 grant was the maximum allowable under the NEA's
Resources for Change initiative. This recognition further establishes the
New World Symphony as a leader among universities and arts organizations for
its path-breaking work in applying Internet2 technology to musical learning
and performance. Internet2 is a consortium being led by over 180 universities
working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy
advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of
tomorrow's Internet. New World Symphony seeks to develop Internet2
technology for distance learning and the creation of educational content by
connecting internationally celebrated artists and teachers with developing
young artists. Internet2 networks provide users with connections over 100
times faster than today's commercial Internet, enabling DVD-quality sound
and video, resulting in musical coachings and master classes that break
geographical barriers without compromising aesthetic quality or integrity.
In December 2001 the New World Symphony's Lincoln Theatre will
be wired for regular Internet2 transmissions, completing the first step in
the institutions' plan to build a performance, rehearsal and broadcast
laboratory, adjacent to the Lincoln Theatre, extensively using Internet2
technology. This laboratory will be at the center of a global music
community transmitting and receiving content for the benefit of all
participants, representing an unparalleled commitment by artistic director
Michael Tilson Thomas and NWS to make technology better serve the arts.
Established in 1987 under the artistic leadership of Michael Tilson Thomas,
the New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy, is an intensive,
multi-faceted three-year fellowship program that prepares highly gifted
graduates of distinguished music programs for leadership positions in
orchestras and ensembles throughout the world. Since its inception, more
