My gut feel is all things being equal that oracle is better and that is what we use…  (DBAs more familiar here)

We (U of Hawaii) are interested in this discussion.  We currently are on MySQL 5.5 (avoiding the later versions so that we may migrate elsewhere easily) and are seriously considering Oracle DB since our DBAs better equipped to troubleshoot performance issues.
