I mean TIER shib is thinking about moving to jetty...  I assume ajp performs 
a lot better then http reverse proxy for apache and servlet container?

Shibboleth officially supports both jetty and tomcat.

Jetty no longer supports AJP, which is essential for any service running 
behind apache. 
We do that with both our IdPs and our group service.
