We use lists for the example you give, although in our case 'members' 
means students plus instructors.  The additional list is just the 
instructors.

The instructor list is part of our representation of a course group, and 
we have to continue to support that.  We could migrate to the separate 
group method, but that would take quite a bit of time and effort.

We have never seen a need to add one group's  instructor list to another 
group.
