I was using the built-in jquery ui icons and I don't think it's worth our time to override their size.  I changed the color of the icons to match the default text.  Here's another screenshot.

Perhaps make the backgrounds paler and the text darker? Sort of like the "Add COU" button in that screenshot, but not blue.

Also, is the yellow background the warning class? If so, I don't think it should use a check mark.

The alerts are shown as they are generated by the page and I manually
generated these as a sampler. If ever only two are generated, one red
and one green, having them stacked on top of each other would be
unavoidable. If you think it would be helpful, I can easily insert
something like "Error:" and "Success:" at the beginning of the text,
after the icon.

    Will you hate me if I point out that red-green colorblindness is the
    most common, so we should never have those two colors directly together
    as they are in the screen shot?
