I'd say the sidebar should be roughly the width of one button (whatever that is), and the main content should be the width of the current page minus the width of the sidebar.

The problem here is not the rendering of the sidebar, which does
have a

No, though it seems to make sense to fix the position of the sidebar
and let the main content adjust to the remainder of the width of the
page. Or some equivalent.
