It sounds like a central comanage system as you imagine it would not
include an ldap server? How are you planning to get group information
out to the apps? I must not understand you properly.

What I'm thinking is that out-of-the-box, no specific external components are assumed, although that also suggests a very limited utility. One of the first things a deployer would likely do is hook up a connection into LDAP or Grouper, although one could also imagine a situation where all provisioning is done via some sort of SPML magic, and that's all COmanage needs to know about.
