OK, Kevin didn’t include a Fun Fact this week so I’ll add one I learned last week at TechEX. It comes from Damian Doyle, an upstanding community member who nevertheless bailed out on us early to go home and make cookies and go to a fancy party, but I digress. In the days leading up to TX he toured Boston and visited Edes & Gill, a print shop/museum where they will print you a copy of the Declaration of Independence the old-fashioned way. Naturally, that old-fashioned way was that everything was manually typeset, with these big trays or cases of letters for each font.

 

Anyway, the fun fact he learned there was that there were separate cases for the “majuscule” or capital letters and for the “minuscule” or non-capitalized letters. And when they set up a typesetter’s work area, guess where each case was put? https://nowiknow.com/why-capital-letters-are-called-upper-case/. Maybe many of you already knew this, but I didn’t, and I find it very cool in its elegant simplicity!
