OK. MIT has been running Pingtel SIPxchange proxy/media server since last
fall. Software is still "beta" and we've been through several different
versions. We're expecting a few bug fixes in the current release and one new
feature - Pingtel says that the next release will be thir first production
release and they expect to have that out this month.
We are running SIPxchange on a Dell "pizza box" running Linux. And are using
a
Cisco 2600 as a PRI gateway to our Lucent 5ESS PBX. We have deployed "hard"
phones from Snom and Pingtel and are also testing Cisco, Siemens, IPdialog,
and
Mitel phones in addition to the "Komodo" FXS (aka Cisco ATA 186) box. We've
also tried several "soft" phones including SJ Labs running on an 802.11
equipped PDA. We're in the process of deploying more phones.
Everything pretty much works as expected. Most of our issues have been with
configuring the Cisco gateway and working out interoperability bugs between
the
gateway and SIPxchange. There are some problems with some of the phones that
we are still working on with the respective manufacturers.
We've recently begun testing routing SIP originated calls to Yale over
Internet2 (if you consider the NoX I2). I'd be interested in talking to
anybody else that wants to do that with us. Calls to
sip:[five-digit-extension]@mit.edu
work whether it is a SIP endpoint or a PBX
extension.
I'd be happy to answer any questions.
