Hi all,
I am presently a visiting scholar at UCLA but I shall be returning to
UFRJ (University of Brazil, formerly Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) by
the end of this year, where I manage a VOIP and Telephony over ATM and IP
group at UFRJ Computer Center.
We have developed an H.323v1/SIP signaling gateway and also we have
been testing a telephony over ATM solution called Sphere from Marconi. We
are in the verge of interconnecting two PBXs (NEC NEAX-2400)
across an existing municipal ATM backbone (via
circuit emulation at first step) and waiting for a H.323/PSTN GW
solution soon (maybe Cisco based) to start playing with VOIP in a larger
scale and maybe initiating some trunking experiments over the
Internet.
As telephone is an expensive resource in Brazil (we have impulses every few
seconds even for local calls), one of the midterm goals is to take advantage of
the new high speed infrastructure being deployed and allow VOIP and Telephony
over IP services nationwide, for universities and research community.
As I have been involved in activity planning for future joint
US/Brazil Internet 2 cooperation, I believe that extending these goals to
cover some international experiments is quite desirable and a way to
explore QoS, MPLS and other traffic engineering solutions
over our OC-3 international link.
A good starting point would be to get information on Internet2
VOIP testbed and identify institutions willing to establish telephony
and VOIP experiments with Brazil.
If you have any contributions and pointers in the above directions I
would deeply appreciate.
Wishful Thanks,
Dr. Paulo H. de Aguiar
Rodrigues
