Internet2 VoIP testbed Effort...

Greetings all, and welcome to the Internet2 VoIP test-bed WG list!

Now that the subscription requests have stopped rolling in, we
have stabilized at a list membership of 70 individuals. There
should be a working group web site with a list of members on
it up shortly. The next order of business is getting
the framework of our test-bed up and running.

As a brief recap, the charter of this group is to tie our
individual IP Telephony and VoIP installations in a test-bed
effort across Internet2 - with the goals of testing inter-operability
issues, media as well as signaling gateway-ing as newer protocols
are implemented, QOS, feature sets, and so on and so forth. I'll
put the charter description from the original announcement on the
upcoming web site as reference for those who may not have seen it.
In short, our goal is to build a test-bed rather than be limited
purely to discussions and the sharing of experiences.

The group size at 70 members is large - large enough to be
considered unwieldy to the task of getting an initial test-bed
off the ground. However, there seems to be a lot of
interest in VoIP at member campuses, and many of you have
indicated you are in the process of considering implementations,
and would like to join this group to watch developments.

That is fine. However, for test-bed purposes, I would like to
identify a list of initial participants that have active
installations going, and the equipment on hand to participate
in the test-bed framework (definition on framework to follow).
To that end, if those that are ready to participate "now" could 
drop me a note "directly", it would help me in gauging the 
initial size of the test-bed.

Those of us that were at the NLANR Joint Techs meeting in 
Minneapolis earlier this summer, and were at the
VoIP BOF, got a chance to discuss a little bit about our 
installations and the possible directions and issues of concern
as we proceed with this. I'll mail a summary of that discussion, 
as well as starting points for us to work on to initiate the test-bed,
as a separate mail message. Meanwhile, those with the ability
and commitment to being the initial participants in the test-bed,
please do drop me a note.
