It looks like we're thinking in parallel (again) with the Collaboration SIG.  Their Abstract for the SMM:
"Why aren't advanced real-time collaboration tools being used more widely? What are some examples of projects that are successfully using them? What are the advanced technologies that warrant our experimentation and pilot use? Come share your thoughts and experiences and listen to ours as we try to create a community of users through this Special Interest Group devoted to promoting the successful adoption of advanced collaboration tools. For more details see https://wiki.internet2.edu/confluence/display/collabsig "

In the past, the Collaboration and PIC groups have been interested in collaborating on a project.  Perhaps now we've found one ...?

These sessions may also be of interest:
Social Identity Working Group:
This working group session will discuss various approaches to adding support for "social" authentication methods to existing Shibboleth SP deploys (eg OpenID, etc).

Scholarly Identity
Scholarly Identity is an emerging set of practices supporting a wide range of academic and professional activities. Publishers, professional societies, universities, libraries, and research agencies all bring use cases for accurate, lifelong, rich identity linking scholars and their work. Implications for campus and federated identity infrastructures are now being realized. Panelists will discuss the state of the art and key directions.
