Found the iPhone/Jabber article I referenced:
First Look video: JiveTalk mobile IM
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13549_7-9980926-30.html
Free for iPhone / touch, purchase for BlackBerry
- Supports multiple conversations
- supports Jabber, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live,
Myspace IM
- Works on WiFi or cellular data
* I don't see support for rooms

On the beejive page, there's a beta for WinMobile(6 only) and iPhone and
iPod Touch; a free trial for BlackBerry
http://www.beejive.com/

Haven't tried it out yet, but looks promising.

Subject: [wg-pic] XMPP news items

I was searching for a recent article about jabber availability on the
iPhone - which I can't forward because I can't find it again - but ran
across these articles of interest in the process:

Yahoo's encouraging words for IM standards
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-9984673-93.html?tag=bl
Google became a major partner in a search-ad deal with Yahoo announced
in June. A sidelight to the deal was one line saying the companies would
make their IM services interoperable...
... used the open XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol)
standard for instant messaging. It's this standard that Dietzen
apparently sees playing a broader role at Yahoo.
...Yahoo opted to use XMPP in its Yahoo Live experimental video service,
according to Process One, a Parisian company that sells XMPP-based IM
server software using the open-source ejabberd software.

How safe is instant messaging? A security and privacy survey

Service providers AOL, Yahoo, Google, etc were surveyed - see the
results
