Hi Tim,

fyi, in case you haven't seen this ... just showed up on the higher ed
email admin list. Thought this might be of interest to the group.

Best.

Here at UW Madison, we've rolled out a new XMPP instant messaging
service for our main @wisc.edu domain as well as many of our hosted
domains. We had an old service for some years, but it wasn't able to
communicate [well] with other XMPP services.

We've already had some users take advantage of the XMPP federation to
communicate with collaborators at other schools. However, the typical
end-user is not aware of this possibility. I'm looking for a way to
increase this awareness as well as promote communication and
collaboration between hi-ed IM administrators.

Some ideas:

* Publish a page (wiki?) that lists all of the known EDU instant
messaging services. This list might get long (we already have 15
chat-enabled domains, and growing,) so it might need to be a search
utility.

* Build a guideline for tools (search function or address book
integration) that determines if a domain is capable of instant messaging
based on some assumptions. E.g., if the domain part of a supplied email
address has DNS SRV _tcp._xmpp-server records.

* Start a HIED-IMADMIN mailing list for communication and collaboration
between EDU IM operators. We could host it on our list server.
Alternatively, we could just piggyback on this list.

Other ideas? Thoughts?
