*Discussion*

Ben T. announced that he is leaving Internet2; his last day will be November
3.
Internet2 has not yet identified a new staff liaison for the PIC working
group,
but expects to do so soon.

The group discussed the potential of Second Life
(http://secondlife.com/whatis/)
as a collaboration tool. Deke noted that in an avatar-based virtual world like
this one, you can (for example) actually hand someone a document, instead of
just promising to email them after the meeting is over. On the other hand,
Ben T. noted that one advantage of traditional audio-only conference calls is
that they allow people to multitask. Deke agreed that a virtual world makes it
more obvious when someone is dividing their attention between the meeting and
something else, like email. It was noted that there is no audio in Second
Life,
just text chat.

There was general agreement that Second Life as a collaboration tool is an
idea
worth experimenting with. [ACTION] Deke will organize a PIC meeting in Second
Life from 4-5pm EST on Nov. 2 (the regular PIC conference call slot); all who
wish to participate will send Deke
()
the name of their Second
Life avatar by 2pm EST on Nov. 2. [ACTION] Rodger will let the list know if
there will still be a PIC conference call on November 2, in parallel with the
virtual meeting in Second Life.

[Note that the system requirements for Second Life are fairly stringent:
http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php . In particular, Linux and many
video cards are not supported.]
