*Discussion*
The group discussed future directions for the PIC WG in light of the recent
ascendancy of XMPP/Jabber. Ben T. noted that PIC's pitch used to be that
SIP-based presence with IM and voice is just over the horizon, but there is
currently a widespread perception that XMPP has won out over SIP. In
particular,
the launch of Google Talk is a major development; Apple, Sun, and several
large
government organizations have also adopted XMPP. Most Jabber clients already
interoperate, and there are a lot of them
(see http://www.jabber.org/software/clients.shtml).
At the same time, while XMPP appears to have won out for presence and IM, it
doesn't provide a path toward more broadly integrated communications. SIP has
been very successful in telephony, and in fact Google Talk promises that SIP
signaling will be supported soon. Ben T. suggested that this hybrid approach
could be a model for future PIC work. There was general agreement that the
group
should continue to evolve the PIC-SER package, but do so in the context of
working to develop a better understanding of SIP-vs-XMPP and SIP/XMPP
hybridization issues.
There was strong interest in getting some of the principals in the many
discussions of these issues to present on PIC conference calls. Some of the
individuals and organizations mentioned were:
- Jon Peterson, IETF Transport Area Advisor
- Peter St. Andre - http://www.jabber.org/people/stpeter.shtml
- Erik Lagerway - http://blog.tmcnet.com/sipthat/
- Barracuda Networks / Deviant Technologies -

- Nortel
- Avaya
