Subject: [wg-pic] draft July 28 PIC minutes

*Action Items as of July 29*

(high priority)
[ACTION] Rodger will pursue call-schedule consensus on the PIC list.
[ACTION] Dennis will follow up on the MIT PIC-SER group's install
issues.
[ACTION] Candace will post instructions for setting up multiple accounts
on eyeBeam to the PIC-SER Wiki.
[ACTION] Rodger will find out who's planning to be at the Fall Member
Meeting.
[ACTION] Jamey will get Steve K. a PALS account.
[ACTION] Ben T. will put Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on PALS, backing up
the SQL database so we can re-create accounts later; then Jamey will
update SER on PALS with the latest PIC-SER package.
[ACTION] Candace will compile a "how to un-wedge the server" document
from postings on the PIC-SER list.
[ACTION] PIC will choose a topic for a Cisco speaker to address at the
MM, and Steve B. will see if he can recruit someone.
[ACTION] Rodger and Ben T. will confer about recruiting participants for
a panel on open-source and commercial implementations of SIP.

(medium priority)
[ACTION] Candace and Jamey will initiate an email discussion of their
proposal to modify the SER PA module so it can do presence via SUBSCRIBE
and NOTIFY, to accommodate clients that don't do PUBLISH.
[ACTION] Anyone who has a BSD or other unusual Unix-like system on which
they can do a test install of the PIC-SER package, will contact Candace.
[ACTION] Candace will add a Wiki document on strict vs. loose routing.

(low priority)
[ACTION] Jamey will enable eyeBeam to use presence info to decide
whether messages should go straight to voicemail.
[ACTION] Jamey will update the interface requirements document.
[ACTION] Jamey will continue working on the future of the skiffs, and
solicit opinions from PIC members as needed.
[ACTION] People will research skiff-like offerings from various
companies:
- Dennis - Newbury
- Steve B. - Airwave
- Rodger - Airespace (now part of Cisco)
- Jeremy - Eckehau (via Walt Magnussen)
[ACTION] Candace will look into Tyler Johnson's H.350-enabled version of
the NIST client.
[ACTION] Ben T. will write a short document describing the motivation
for the paths-in-the-snow approach to PIC development.

*Attendees*

Rodger Will (chair) - Ford
Joe Rork - Ford
Sylvia Abretti - Nortel
Steve Kirk - Nortel
Jamey Hicks - HP
Steve Blair - Penn
Deke Kassabian - Penn
Dennis Baron - MIT
Candace Holman - Harvard
Megan Pengelly - Columbia
Ben Chinowsky (scribe) - Internet2

*Discussion*

Steve K., Sylvia, and Rodger discussed Nortel's planned involvement in
PIC.
Rodger has been testing Nortel's Multimedia Communication Server (MCS)
in a lab at Ford. Rodger and Steve are interested in helping ensure that
MCS is interoperable, both inter-domain and cross-platform. Steve also
noted the possibility of getting MCS to work in tandem with SER to
provide a more complete set of services. Steve is a systems engineer;
Sylvia is responsible for the higher-education market for MCS.

The group discussed changing the PIC conference call schedule so that
PIC-SER participants in various time zones can join more of the calls.
It was agreed that once or twice a month the weekly call should be at
Thursday 10:00am Eastern instead of Thursday 4:00pm Eastern, to make it
easier for Europeans to attend.
[ACTION] Rodger will pursue call-schedule consensus on the PIC list.

Several PIC-SER participants have had install problems. [ACTION] Dennis
will follow up on the MIT PIC-SER group's install issues. [ACTION]
Candace will post instructions for setting up multiple accounts on
eyeBeam to the PIC-SER Wiki.
Candace noted that Henning Schulzrinne discusses the importance of
auto-configuration in the current issue of VON Magazine (see
http://www.vonmag.com/issue/2005/jul/features/pioneers.htm).

Given the lack of sufficient space, the group agreed to cancel plans for
a demo at the Internet2 Fall Member Meeting. The MM also conflicts with
VON; [ACTION] Rodger will find out who's planning to be at the Fall
Member Meeting.

The group agreed to use the August 4 call for a PIC-SER testing and
troubleshooting session. Rodger noted that the conference bridge is
available
24/7 for impromptu gatherings; use the same call-in info as for the
regular Thursday calls.
