CafeSip is using the JAIN jain-sip-presence-proxy code to create a free SIP proxy called SipExchange. This is all written with Java (hence all the J's), with SOAP and beans (Enterprise Java Beans) so this is a very different coding community than the SER developers. I didn't see any mention of SIMPLE in the Initial Release Plan, but it is quite early. It's nice to see SIP development spreading, though the jury will still be out on whether Java is a wise choice in terms of scalability. SER is written in C, likely with the intention of speed and scalability.

Hello,
We have just released Jiplet Container 0.0.3a. The jiplet container is SIP application development framework that closely follows the servlet model. It can run as a standalone application or as a JBOSS service. For more details on this release, please visit - http://www.cafesip.org/news/august-7-2005-news-1.html.

In this release, we have incorporated large chunks of the JAIN-SIP-PRESENCE-PROXY code developed by Ranga and others into the Jiplet Container in order to support the SIP proxy functionality. We thank the developers for the code that they have kindly contributed to the public domain. Of course, we have had to make quite a bit of changes in order for this to work with the jiplet container. This gives rise to the challenge as to how to keep our code synched with the original code.

In addition, we have initiated another project called SipExchange that will provide a presence and proxy server functions and more. It will run as J2EE application and will use the Jiplet Container. We do plan to incorporate quite a bit of the jain-sip-presence-proxy code once again. For more details on this project, visit http://www.cafesip.org/projects/sipexchange/index.html.

Regards,
Amit Chatterjee,
CafeSip Project
