UNAM has presence!
Israel Ortega and I have been testing over the last few days and initially we thought there was a problem with presence updating. We both saw messages being sent but not received on the other end, as if the server was not passing them on. We tested, both with accounts on his server, and both with accounts on the Internet2 server. Israel later tested internally at UNAM and found that it worked perfectly. Today, we found that it would work between my LAN and his, but there were long delays of up to 30 seconds for refreshing the presence. The avatars would change to gray in between updates. We both set our refresh intervals to 1 second but that made no difference. Setting our refresh intervals to 3600 seemed to be equally as responsive.
Though it did not occur to me until the today, I used the old-fashioned tools, ping and traceroute, to determine that the route between our campuses was not strictly over Abilene. I was getting 25% packet loss, and that was enough to cause this delay, and sometimes total loss of SIP/SIMPLE messages between us. We both saw lots of "481 Call/Transaction Does Not Exist" messages in the Diagnostic Log, as if the transaction had timed out. Does this make sense to the ser experts?
Israel tweaked a few settings locally, and will make a request to CUDI to correct the routing problem. He also promised to write up the problem and resolution. The lessons we learned were - you may need to wait longer than you think to see a presence update, and make sure to probe the network between locations that are having a problem.
What I'd like to know more about - how to debug a 481 error.
