Here are some devices that could be used for location tracking.

Cricket uses RF and Ultrasound to give centimeter level accuracy:

Zigbee motes can be used RF for location tracking, but they are not 802.11:

Motes are used for many things, but here is a pointer to the software for motes:

Software to do location tracking with these devices is available. For the motes, the software is on sourceforge.net.
