*Discussion*
The group revisited its decision to do a double (2.5 hours) session at the
Spring Internet2 Member Meeting. Jeremy stressed that recruiting CIO's for
paths-in-the-snow trials is a priority, and suggested that an MM session might
not be the best way to get the most bang for our buck in this regard. Dennis
suggested trying to get one or two CIOs lined up to participate before the MM,
rather than trying to recruit them all there. Jeremy said we need about six
presenters to fill up the 2.5 hours; of those on the call, only Joe said he'd
be
able to present. The group agreed to continue this discussion on the next
call.
The group reviewed the matrix Candace put together to summarize the features
added to SER to support presence demos
(http://pic.internet2.edu/trials/PA_Module_Documentation.pdf). [ACTION]
Candace
will write a description of a simple way to append PUBLISH messages from the
client to the servers, in order to provide a basic way to do location and
presence tracking. Candace suggested that RFC 3903
(http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3903.txt) is likely to spur the development of new
clients.
The group has identified several companies that make possible alternatives to
the skiffs. Steve has had conversations with Airwave, Airmagnet, and Eckehau.
All three have similar issues: they don't provide an interface to their
database, their sensors are all still in the $500 range, and all want to sell
you a hardware/software package, more or less as an appliance. Candace thinks
RFC 3903 might help encourage openness in this area as well. [ACTION] People
will research skiff-like offerings from various companies:
- Dennis - Newbury
- Steve - Airwave
- Candace - Airspace and Airmagnet
- Jeremy - Radiance and Alcatel
- Jeremy - Eckehau (via Walt Magnusson)
