*Action Items as of September 15*
[ACTION] Candace will send email to CS professors at Harvard about involving
their students in PIC trials over the coming year.
[ACTION] Jamey will send the group a note clarifying what code belongs to HP
and
what's open source.
[ACTION] Anyone who can lead a discussion of the code-consolidation and
paper-writing topics for the Austin WG meeting (see below), will contact
Jeremy.
*Attendees*
Jeremy George, Xiaotao Wu, Dennis Baron, Ben Teitelbaum, Mike Enyeart, Candace
Holman, Steve Blair, Joe Rork, Jamey Hicks, and Ben Chinowsky were all on at
least one of the September 2 and September 9 calls.
*Discussion*
Following Jeremy's August 31 note to the list, the September 2 and September 9
calls were devoted to reevaluating the direction of the PIC working group. The
group reached the following conclusions:
- The Austin PIC trial is cancelled. The code is not stable, and key technical
people from HP had a scheduling conflict.
- There will be a PIC poster session in Austin; see
http://events.internet2.edu/2004/fall-mm/postersessions.html.
- Up to this point, the PIC trials have been the group's main focus; there is
increasing interest in a variety of other activities. These activities will be
the subject of the PIC WG meeting in Austin (Wednesday, September 29, 7:30pm -
9:00pm). Here is a list of these proposed activities, with the names of people
who will be presenting them at the meeting. Note that two are still open;
contact Jeremy if you are interested in presenting either of these.
1. [open] - Consolidating, packaging, and documenting the code to enable PIC
trials on the campuses.
2. [open] - Producing a paper detailing the experiences of the PIC trials so
far, and drawing lessons from them.
3. Jeremy - As a first step toward the lessons-learned paper, producing an
extended abstract outlining what the paper will contain. Jeremy will have a
draft of this ready for review ahead of the WG meeting.
4. Jeremy - Getting grants for "paths in the snow engineering" PIC trials.
There
is strong interest in using real-world deployments to find out what aspects of
PIC people actually want, and how PIC actually gets used. Students at
Internet2
member universities are the main focus here; also, Mike suggested using PIC to
show the status of scientific instruments, and Jeremy suggested exploring
uses in the medical community.
5. Ben T. - Running a PIC service on the model of Free World Dialup
(http://www.pulver.com/fwd/).
6. Joe - Making plans for the next PIC trial, in the light of the group's
decisions on its new priorities.
