*Discussion*

The group reviewed action items:

[5-Aug-04] Anyone who has computers they can donate for the kiosk will contact
Joe.
- Two computers are needed, ideally twinheaded. [ACTION] Ben T. will get Joe
the
dimensions of the media cards for the kiosk. [ACTION] Joe will follow up with
Ben T. about laptops Ben T. may be able to make available for the kiosk.

[5-Aug-04] Joe will talk to Ben T. about using donated funds from Microsoft
for
headsets and handsets for the kiosk.
- Done. The funds will be available; what kind of headsets/handsets they'll be
used for is still TBD.

[5-Aug-04] Joe will follow up with Ben T. on integration with speaker notes
and
surveys at the Fall MM.
- The idea here is for fat clients to be able to automatically present URLs
for
resources (e.g. slides) relevant to what's going on in the room the user is
in.
Implementing this would take some server-side changes. [ACTION] On the next
call
that Jamey is on, the group will further discuss what's needed to enable
per-room display of resources.

[29-Jul-04] Ben T. will get the H.350 engineers involved in planning for the
Fall MM demo.
- In process. The Austin people are willing to help.

[29-Jul-04] Ben T. will contact vendors about providing a PSTN gateway.
- Done; Internet2 Corporate Member VoEx (http://www.voex.com) has agreed to do
this. [ACTION] Ben T. will make further arrangements with VoEx.

[15-Jul-04] Ben T. will follow up with the Xten folks on Austin participation.
- Done; no response yet.

[15-Jul-04] Deke will contact Apple about UAs for Austin.
- Done; Apple doesn't appear to be interested.

[15-Jul-04] Ben T. will set up a subgroup to keep the client requirements doc
up
to date.
- The group agreed that while the document needs to be updated, this may not
require a subgroup. [ACTION] Ben T. will ask Jamey if he wants to keep being
in
charge of the client requirements doc.

[08-Jul-04] On a future call, Ben T. will schedule a discussion of 1) goals
and
next steps for including click-to-dial directories of SIP.edu-enabled schools
in
the Austin demo, and 2) the Stony Brook proposal for SIP.edu metadirectories.
- The Stony Brook proposal isn't on the critical path for Austin, and Ben T.
has
been experimenting with a web proxy for click-to-dial, so this item is
changing
to [ACTION] Ben T. will give a progress report on using a web proxy to enable
click-to-dial for SIP.edu.

[17-Jun-04] Joe will maintain a list of Austin demo goals and assignments on
the
PIC web site.
- Still to do.

[03-Jun-04] Ben T. will get contacts for the buildout for Austin, and in
particular find out when information on the physical layout of the meeting
will
be available.
- Done.

Dennis noted that according to Jamey the PALS server has become less stable.
Jeremy said that at the last demo, it needed to be restarted several times a
day; he suggested that before Austin it should be stable enough to run for two
or three days at a time.

Ben T. reported on his visit to UCSD to see the ActiveCampus project
(http://activecampus.ucsd.edu). While this is a successful example of a
researcher using a campus as a living lab for presence apps, the deployment is
browser-based; the only real-time element is IM. The Active Campus people are
very interested in replacing some of their stuff with SIP, in particular
replacing Jabber with SER. They are also interested in participating in
SIP.edu.
An ActiveCampus usage study involved hundreds of undergraduates observed by
sociologists; a couple of papers came out of that. Overall the deployment
seems
fairly cautious; they don't seem to see ActiveCampus as having anything to do
with their production campus IT deployment.

More generally, Ben T. observed that it's looking increasingly unlikely that
presence will move from demos at meetings to persistent campus deployments any
time soon. The group agreed to keep its focus on the next demo, then revisit
its
medium-term ambitions -- wider, persistent deployments, or a continuing focus
on
demos? -- at its meeting in Austin and in subsequent conference calls.
