*Discussion*
Most of the call was devoted to reviewing action items:
1. Joe will organize a conference call to talk about video room bugging with
Art and Mike sometime in the next week or so.
- Joe just got a RADVISION box; he's upgrading his Sayre box, and it's a
matter
of getting them to play together. This probably won't be ready for April; it
was
agreed to move this to the back burner to accommodate things that might be
ready
for April.
2. Joe will coordinate with staff in re putting Polycoms in rooms.
- Ben T. has done this.
3. Joe will shop for USB headsets and handsets (Clarisys handsets in
particular), looking to narrow the choice down to a single model.
- Joe reported that we can't get the Clarisys handsets. He's now looking at a
nice Logitech over-the-head headset -- normally $40 a copy, but we can get
them
for $29.21. [AI] Joe will find out the lead time we need to buy the Logitech
headsets, and get prices on Bluetooths, behind-the-head headsets, and handsets
also. Ben T. noted that we're only expecting around a hundred participants in
the April trial, and suggested that we buy the nicest headsets we can afford
while still getting one for almost everybody.
4. Joe will ask Jamey about leaving the PALS server where it is and connecting
to it from Arlington.
- Jamey has yet to consider this. Georgetown has the necessary connectivity,
and
the PALS server is rack-mounted, so the group is leaning toward leaving it
where
it is. [AI] Jamey will consult with the Georgetown people and make a final
decision about leaving the PALS server where it is and connecting to it from
Arlington.
5. The group will also take up this question with the Georgetown people.
- The group took advantage of John Fisher's presence on the call to discuss
several Georgetown-specific issues:
- It looks like a small but adequate war room will be available.
- We won't need to tear everything down every night, but we do have some
rooms for different lengths of time than we have others.
- [AI] We need to get a count of how many static IPs we need.
- If we want to have switches in every room, [AI] We need to figure out
where
to get more switches.
- We need a wireless port on the wireless VLAN; this will not be a problem.
Ben T. noted that as long as we can get on the VLAN and ARP to any of the
wireless hosts, we'll be happy. There will be no wireless multicast.
- Most rooms will need 4 ports (skiff, uplink, phone, video). None of the
rooms will need gigabit connectivity. All the wired ports will have multicast.
6. On the next call, all -- especially Jamey -- will discuss how to train
people to help calibrate the skiffs.
- Jamey noted that Candace has volunteered to write up a how-to document for
this. [AI] Jamey will show Candace the process of calibrating the skiffs, and
Candace will document it.
7. Larry will find out the current status of location technologies in Cisco's
WiFi business unit.
- Still to do.
8. Ben T. will call his contact at Microsoft, stressing that PIC is looking to
Microsoft to do the Windows development.
- Done. The contact says the development looks easy.
9. Steve will contact Wave3 and Xten, and get an update from Deke and prod him
to talk to Apple. [See the thread starting with Steve's March 5 note to the
list.]
- Done. Jeff King from Wave3 wants to participate. No decision yet from Xten
or
Apple.
10. Jeremy will contact Claremont.
- Done. We don't have anyone on board at Claremont yet, and no involvement is
expected in time for April, but the door is open for future participation.
11. Ben T. will work on finding a contact at Nortel.
- Done, but Ben T. hasn't talked to him yet. [AI] Ben T. will follow up with
his
contact at Nortel.
12. Joe Rork and Ben T. will try some Nortel interoperability testing, running
the client against SARA and SBS.
- Still to do.
13. Jeremy will get Joe and Ben the ID info for SBS.
- Still to do.
14. Ben T. will resend his note to Angi, adding another person who might be
able to help, and get a response for Joe.
- Done.
15. Ben T. will look into replicating the PALS config we had in Hawaii, and
resend related info to Xiaotao.
- Done. The PALS server is online, and we can tell the Microsoft developer to
test against it. [AI] Jamey and Ben T. will ensure that the PALS server is
working properly. [AI] All will test the PALS server.
Joe noted that he'd asked RADVISION about getting eConf to play with; they
were
unenthusiastic. He's also sent mail to Nortel, but hasn't heard back. Joe
suggested that overall it doesn't look like we'll have any new clients this
time
around, with the possible exception of Microsoft, and there was general
agreement.
Art noted that while he'll be able to handle packing up SIPC and other
documentation as before, he can't take on the overall role of documentation
czar
this time around. [AI] Joe will find a new documentation czar. Xiaotao has
made
some additions to the SIPC documentation and is planning others; [AI] Xiaotao
will send Joe an HTML copy of the latest SIPC documentation.
[AI] Joe will send Xiaotao a note on the interface-names bug he found in SIPC.
