the application came up!  Ha!  must be because my wireless is at eth1 instead of eth0?  I might try a phone call ... if I can find the phone directory!

Seems 'ifconfig' causes problem.
Can you try to run

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 | grep inet

and see what's the result?

I remember you mentioned that you are using eth1, I created a version
using eth1 and put it at the same place:

I just downloaded this and did a "mv sipc sipc.linux" and then ran sipc
... same error but it did create the ~/.sipc directory! I've attached

domainname (none), so I did the "domainname -F paldomain then it shows
domainname "pals.internet2.edu", so I ran "sipc" once again, got the

Unfortunatelly, I am not in the center. I am in New York City right now.
Are you using the sipc I sent to you yesterday?
http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~xiaotaow/wgpic/sipc
If not, please download that one and use it to replace sipc in your sipc
directory.
Thanks!

Are you here at the East/West Center? I'm happy to let you munge around

I deleted the ~/.sipc directory as asked. When I run sipc why doesn't

it creat a new ~/.sipc directory?

This should not happen. The ~/.sipc directory get connected at the
begining unless the 'uname' cannot be executed.
Can you try again and send me the file ~/.sipc/sip.dbg
