[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ md5sum --string="abcd"
e2fc714c4727ee9395f324cd2e7f331f "abcd"
eth1 is my wireless card
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ /sbin/ifconfig eth1
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:1D:1C:B1:16

HEre's what "domainname" now shows:
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ domainname
pals.internet2.edu
I still get the same error message ... sigh.

For md5sum, can you try md5sum --string="abcd" Seems domainname return value is not valid, maybe you can try to create a new file named domainname with the content echo pals.internet2.edu the other thing to check is to run /sbin/ifconfig eth0 and see whether it runs ok.
