[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ md5sum --string="abcd"
e2fc714c4727ee9395f324cd2e7f331f  "abcd"

eth1 is my wireless card
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ /sbin/ifconfig eth1
eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:60:1D:1C:B1:16
          inet addr:128.171.225.119  Bcast:128.171.28.50  Mask:255.255.254.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:14924 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:4760 errors:194 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:10180337 (9.7 Mb)  TX bytes:671189 (655.4 Kb)
          Interrupt:3 Base address:0x100

HEre's what "domainname" now shows:
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ domainname
pals.internet2.edu

I still get the same error message ... sigh.

For md5sum, can you try

md5sum --string="abcd"

Seems domainname return value is not valid, maybe you can try to create
a new file named domainname with the content

echo pals.internet2.edu

the other thing to check is to run

/sbin/ifconfig eth0

and see whether it runs ok.

Thanks!

I did put "." at the beginning:
PATH=.:/usr/lib/globus/bin:/usr/lib/globus/sbin:./:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/bdr/bin

Here's the commands - md5sum never "finished" so I CTL-C it.

[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ uname
Linux
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ domainname
(none)
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ domainname
(none)
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ hostname
smallville
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ grep
Usage: grep [OPTION]... PATTERN [FILE]...
Try `grep --help' for more information.
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$ ps
  PID TTY TIME CMD
 3314 pts/1 00:00:00 bash
 3502 pts/1 00:00:00 ps
[bdr@smallville sipc.linux]$

here's the sipc.linux directory - I did delete the ~/.sipc directory but
I still get the same error message.

In your path, please put "." at the begining of your PATH

export PATH=.:$PATH

Can you please run the following program separately on your machine and
check whether they can run properly.

md5sum
uname
domainname
hostname
grep
ps
