Thought of some over the weekend.
Case 0: A furnace repair man from the local energy company is fixing a
furnace and realizes that he is missing a part. A query between the
centralized inventory system and the ALS system gives him the location of the
three nearest trucks that have the part required. He checks the presence of
all three trucks, realizes that the second truck is currently available, and
contacts him to set up a meeting place to get the part.
Case 1: Better yet, the furnace realizes that it is broken and contacts the
local energy company with a list of the parts it might need. That is, of
course, that the furnace doesn't break down because of a certain embedded OS
having a blue screen of death. JACK_FROST VIRUS SLAMS FURNACES ACROSS
MIDWEST. The thermal images from space shows a big black patch where the
upper mid-west used to be. Sounds strangely familiar...
Case 10: A PIC/ALS device is embedded in a pacemaker. If the wearer is
unfortunate enough to have a heart attack, the device is able to contact EMS
with a specific location of the wearer, setting the wearer's presence in the
presence server to "HAVING A HEART ATTACK". Of course, some privacy settings
would have to be set to allow only certain people (EMS, spouse, doctor,
lawyer) access to this info.
Case 11: To take the restaurant idea a bit further, a hungry belly checks
for 5 preferred restaurants in his area for wait times, and automatically
sets his presence, at each individual restaurant, to "waiting for table".
This is an interesting case for individual, specialized presence registrars.
After registering himself on each server, they give back an estimated time to
eat, and he chooses one of the five. This then removes his request from the
4 remaining restaurants. On the flip side, the restaurant can take these
reservations at more then face value by knowing the distance of the possible
eater, and seat people accordingly. So, if the restaurant has a party of
people waiting in the bar to be seated, and realizes that the guests that
they are holding a reservation for are going to be 15 minutes late, they can
more efficiently seat the people at the bar.
I hear those deely-bopper headsets are going for millions on ebay!
