Right.  And users can't set their place to an arbitrary string.

This would clearly be better from a performance point of view.  I'm
sort of a MySQL ignoramus.  If you add the column to the place table,
I could probably handle the rest.  I'd have it poll the rooms every
minute, since we are displaying minutes left.

Speaking of polling, it would make sense to add a refresh directive to
the portal page's HTML.

Maybe.  I have to pop up to the political layer for most of the rest
