I am running the latest release of SUSE, and sipc fired up first try, but
the welcome screen won't go away, and it persists across all of my desktops.
Any hints on how to get rid of this?

You don't need to change the configuration. Could you please check and make
sure that the audio recording/playing works on your laptop? And please check
to make sure the audio volume is ok.
