We ended up buying a HaiVision Makito, in case anyone is interested.
It seems, though, than no-one is making a poor H.264 encoder these days!
Went nuts comparing features..
We just started testing it, and you can see the SAPs in VLC.
Connecticut College AVC-HD (6 mbps) and AVC-SD (1.5 mpbs).
The bit rates are probably too low, but adequate for low-motion.
Thanks to all for your feedback.
If you feel like testing, and have problems receiving the streams, please let me know.
Funny, it works on almost every computer here except my Mac Book, even when reinstalling VLC after deleting preferences. Have to dig deeper.
Thanks,
Frank

Hi all, we are looking to purchase an SD/HD H.264 encoder.
Basic requirements are:
1. Be able to ingest 480i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p video through HDMI and analog component, and output same resolutions.
2. Be able to ingest separate audio, balanced and unbalanced
3. Be able to create multicast transport H.264/AVC streams to be decoded by latest VLC in OSX and Windows.
4. Be able to create SAPs detectable by latest VLC in OSX and Windows in default install.
5. Web based admin interface
6. Wide range of encoding bit rates...1 to 18 mbps.
7. Portable
8. Cost less than $9,000
I'm comparing the Visionary Solutions AVN441HD/AVN422HD with the HaiVision Makito 290E-DVI, it appears they both offer the above. There are other requirements, but the above are the major ones, and both units seem to support the lesser ones also.
We have two Visionary Solutions AVN420s now, and are very happy with them, but the Makito looks nice also.
HaiVision has merged with Video Furnace
Anyone have direct recent experience with either of the above products or companies?
You can reply off list if you want.
Or any other suggestions?
Thanks,
