Hi Venkat,

PIM-SM Register mesg is a unicast mesg and hence should be
routed using unicast routing topology (RIB). Infact once PIM
forms a register/register-stop etc unicast messages, ideally
speaking pim should not bother how the packet is sent.

On all the non pim-sm routers aware (and also pim-sm aware
routers), the register pkt would look like another unicast
packet and thus should be routed without any problem as long
as the route to its destination viz. RP exists.

The same goes for register-stop pkt.

=> It is usually advisable to have a network where both
unicast (RIB) & multicast (MRIB) are congruent.

PS:

WG id would be more appropriate for PIM
related queries.

Prashant Jhingran

Does the PIM-SM unicast message like the register message
follow the
unicast routing topology or the Multicast routing topology
in a
multicast aware router.
Also does anyone know if the PIM-SM register messages be
dropped by a
non multicast aware router or still processed and routed
like a
regular unicast packet.

Thanks,
Venkat
