WMU first began to experience problems about a month ago when network
administrators were forced to
turn off a service called IP Multicast because it was flooding the network
with traffic.
IP Multicast usually works to conserve network resources by sending out only
one piece of
information to a variety of destinations instead of individually sending each
destination a packet
of information.
For instance, if 30 computers wanted to watch a live video on a Web site,
only one feed would be
needed on the network for all 30 computers with IP Multicast, as opposed to
30 individual feeds
without it.
"Ninety percent of computers don't use IP Multicast, but it's there for the
10 percent who do use
it," Kohrman said.
The most harmful virus on the network has been a virus called
"Backdoor.Ranky," said Matt Townsend,
university help desk consultant.
This virus acts as a Trojan horse probing proxy servers.
