i'm new to the mcast world and seek understanding. Please bare with me, and
anyone who would desire to enlighten me please feel free to do so.
UMTP (udp mcast tunneling protocol); Ross thanks. I just look that up on
google.com. I was wondering if something like this existed. It seems like
a protocol that takes the place of IGMP. Does it? I am a network engineer
for the us navy in san diego. From what I understand in order for my pc to
successfully receive a multicast feed and be considered as a branch off of a
mcast distribution tree, my pc must first do a IGMP join message (Host
Membership Report) to a local router to be added to a mcast tree. But from
what I understand if the router on my local subnet isn't participating in a
mcast routing protocol like DVMRP, PIM, etc, and thus also having IGMP
enabled then when that router receives my IGMP join it won't know what to do
with it so I won't be able to join any mcast groups. True?
if i understand all that correctly then my further thoughts were , well if I
can't "directly", using IGMP, join a mcast feed/group then is there a way to
tunnel through my local internet (little "i") into the MBone using some
protocol and thus successful join a mcast group?
...and low and behold here comes Ross with UMTP.
would umtp solve me inability to join a mcast group on the MBone through a
local internet cloud that doesn't run mcast routing protocols?
if so, someone please tell me how to use UMTP from my desktop here to join a
mcast group in the Internet MBone. please.

Can anyone figure out what multicast groups/ports these streams
use? (Apparently this information is hidden somewhere in MS proprietary
BS.)
I'd like to try receiving these streams, but my only access to the MBone
right now is via a UMTP tunnel, so to receive them, I need to know which
specific multicast group(s)/port(s) to tunnel.
Ross.
