Well, we run pure pim-sm with statically configured RPs (in
NORDUnet we use the anycast-RP hack), and s-gw and sw-gw agree
that 193.10.252.1 is the RP for 233.2.171.1, and for those two
routers the nearest RP is the one at sw-gw.
Are you perhaps thinking of "show ip pim rp-hash"? Not sure what
that would tell you; here's the output from the two routers I'm
focusing on:
s-gw>show ip pim rp 233.2.171.1
Group: 233.2.171.1, RP: 193.10.252.1, v2, uptime 05:44:23, expires never
s-gw>show ip pim rp-hash 233.2.171.1
No RP available for this group
s-gw>
sw-gw>show ip pim rp 233.2.171.1
Group: 233.2.171.1, RP: 193.10.252.1, v2, next RP-reachable in 00:00:55
sw-gw>show ip pim rp-hash 233.2.171.1
No RP available for this group

Sorry; must have forgotten to reply to that one. I'm not sure
how the router can revert to dense-mode behaviour with each and
every interface configured for "ip pim sparse", though:
