While I was browsing our MSDP tables at random, I noticed a lot of
source announcements for group 229.55.150.208. This address is used
by a product called "Norton Ghost" for server discovery, as documented
under:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/pfdocs/1999033015222425
This product/protocol seems to enjoy wide deployment, which you can
verify by looking for this group address in MSDP monitors for large
networks such as: http://palpatine.ucs.indiana.edu/~msdpd/ (Abilene).
As some other server-discovery-type group addresses are already
commonly filtered on MSDP boundaries, I'd suggest adding this too.
Note that Norton Ghost uses multicast in other phases of the protocol
(using different addresses). It would be nice if someone who grasps
the spirit of multicast address allocation could check the protocol
for sanity, and comment on other operational problems this might bring
up.
Regards,
