The Library of Congress has asked to partner with our community on an upcoming free distance learning program aimed at K-12 teachers,
school librarians, and young adult and children’s librarians to celebrate “El Día de los Niños, El Día de los Libros”. This should be a wonderful professional development opportunity with a wonderful set of participating authors and illustrators. Full details
on the program are below. Please help us distribute this opportunity far and wide across your learning communities! The event will have a live interactive videoconference dimension as well as a live web stream option. Thank you, James James Werle Executive Director, US UCAN Program Internet2.edu 360-499-2069 April 30th, 2018 3:00pm – 4:10pm EST Program Audience Program Details Monday April 30th has been traditionally celebrated as “Dia de los Ninos, Dia de los Libros!”, as championed
by the American Library Association,
to honor “the day of the child, the day of the book.” The Educational Outreach team at the Library of Congress, in partnership with Internet2, is pleased invite public librarians, school librarians, and K-12 teachers from around the country to join us via
interactive videoconference or live web stream to honor this day and its value in promoting diversity in children’s literature. The conversation will take on the theme of librarians as heroes and how they have inspired and continue to facilitate diversity
in books and other media. The program will feature award-wining authors and an illustrator; an academic scholar and researcher; and a reference librarian
from the LOC Hispanic division. Lee Ann Potter, Director of Educational Outreach at the Library of Congress will moderate a panel featuring Carole Boston Weatherford
(author) and Eric Velasquez (illustrator) who will share background about their new book, Schomburg: The Man Who Built A Library.
Velasquez, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents, was born in Spanish Harlem and grew up in Harlem. His dual heritage coupled with
the experience of living in dual cultures in New York City gives Eric a rich and unique cultural perspective. He will demonstrate his artistic considerations for his illustrations. Carole will share her thoughts about Schomburg and why she chose to write
about him. Eric and Carole will be joined by Meg Medina who will feature her most recent bi-lingual
book for young children, Mango, Abuela, and Me / Mango, Abela y yo.” Meg will discuss her literary portfolio as well
as share examples from other contemporary authors of color, particularly those of blended Latinx heritage. Dr. Marilisa Jiménez Garcia, Assistant Professor of English and Latin American Studies at Lehigh University, will provide context
to the discussion about the background and development of this literary genre, and Catalina Gomez, reference librarian from the Hispanic Division at the Library of Congress, will share related resources from the Library’s collections and ways to access them. HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
