All,

It has been a privilege and a wonderful professional opportunity to work at Internet2 and with all of you.  Please know that it was not an easy decision to leave such an incredibly open, collaborative, and brilliant community.  My work experience at Internet2 was unlike any other I had in the past and it was an amazing learning and professional growth opportunity. This was all mainly because of the unparalleled specialness and collegiality of the R&E community.

I will be going back to telecom management consulting working for a small firm in the DC area where my clients will primarily be the Federal government.  Given my new role, there may be opportunities for intersections with the R&E community and I am hopeful our professional (and personal) paths may cross again!

I am here through Friday, December 1.  My personal email is and my mobile is 571-338-9899.  Please stay in touch!

Warm Regards,

Susannah

Subject: Staff Announcement

Dear Internet2 Staff:

Susannah Spellman, Executive Director of Internet2’s U.S. UCAN program, has announced that she plans to leave Internet2 effective December 1, 2017.  She will be returning to her prior field of telecommunications management consulting.  I have had the pleasure of working with Susannah for the past five years at Internet2 and, prior to that, for four years while we worked on the BTOP program.

Susannah has provided enthusiasm and leadership in representing the needs of the community anchor institutions across the U.S., as well as promoting R&E networks as essential broadband partners to the anchor community.  She has excelled in several areas and has accomplished numerous achievements for Internet2 and the R&E community, including:  expanding the U.S. UCAN program to include three additional states and to be more representative of Internet2’s BTOP award; assisting with the launch of the Presidential Primary Source Program and LOLA4All working groups; convening and hosting meetings for the U.S. UCAN community at Global Summits, annual retreats, and other meetings to promote collaboration and information sharing among U.S. UCAN partners; and facilitating Internet2’s relationships with key national anchors such as the Library of Congress, National Park Service, NOAA, and the Smithsonian.

In addition, Susannah has been instrumental in working with community partners on grant-related matters including the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and U.S. Ignite.  For IMLS, she has helped develop a broadband toolkit and training program to promote broadband awareness and education among rural, small, and tribal librarians.  For U.S. Ignite, she has been supporting their Smart Gigabit Cities initiative designed to foster the development and adoption of gigabit, smart city applications.

Susannah’s hard work, leadership, program management skills, and positive “can do” attitude will be missed at Internet2.

Future questions regarding U.S. UCAN should be directed to me at or James Werle at .

Please join me in wishing Susannah all the best in her new position.

John
