FYI: Interesting TCP performance analysis. Really need to think about how these things are relate to high performance networks vs last mile commodity networks...

Very nice, very interesting data about the differences between the various tests. I looked through Steve’s slides and note that there was a note about “informing regulatory processes” as a goal of the research. Can Steve tell us what he thinks the implications are for regulatory processes?

Hi all,

As I already mentioned separately to a number of you, (thanks to Josh) we are now publishing on BigQuery (https://developers.google.com/bigquery/) the data collected by SideStream (http://code.google.com/p/m-lab-research/wiki/SideStream).
In short, SideStream is an experiment that runs on all the M-Lab servers and collects a web100 log at the end of every TCP connection running against the M-Lab servers. You can find more info about web100 logs herehttp://www.web100.org/download/kernel/2.5.30/tcp-kis.txt.

Thanks to the SideStream data, you will be able to
  • Get very rich data about all the TCP connections opened by M-Lab measurement tools and
  • Easily compare TCP performance across different experiments running on the M-Lab platform.
Steve Bauer has been analyzing the SideStream data for a while, with very interesting results (see for examplehttp://www.caida.org/workshops/isma/1202/slides/aims1202_sbauer.pdf, where Steve compares SamKnows and NDT numbers).

I'd be more than happy to help you with the analysis of the data (via BigQuery or by using different tools).
Let me know if you have any comments/questions and if you need a BigQuery account.

Cheers,
--Tiziana
